Jan and Maggie sat by\u00a0the window and admired\u00a0a glass\u00a0jug\u00a0filled with beautiful pink roses fresh from the garden; full and in bloom and softly scented.\u00a0\u00a0Sally’s favourite\u00a0had become\u00a0 theirs too.\u00a0 They were\u00a0enjoying their usual choice of\u00a0tea\u00a0with Alice’s award winning lemon cake.\u00a0\u00a0In cahoots.\u00a0 Like when they were little and mischief was in the making.<\/p>\n

I’m a bit jealous of her you know.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n

Who?<\/em><\/p>\n

Sally. She’s sort of … unflappable and I’m, well, more the Calamity Jane type without the horse and Howard Keel.\u00a0 Guess\u00a0it’s all part of my charm!\u00a0 Aunt Kate knew her before she moved here and seems really fond of her but won\u2019t go into any details. And you know what she’s like, she’d never give any information away. <\/em><\/p>\n

There might not be any ‘details’.\u00a0\u00a0 And I thought you made a great Calamity Jane in that school production, actually.<\/em><\/p>\n

Look at these! Silk, pure silk! I’ll bet her mother spun ’em!\u00a0 ~ Calamity Jane<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

They giggled like two school girls, reminiscing; opening night in the school theatre, the badly fitting costumes and the wobbly scenery, the primadonnas, trying to keep a straight face singing Once I had a Secret Love, <\/em>the boy who played Wild Bill Hickock and the gloriously camp and wonderfully funny director.\u00a0 And wanting to do it all over again.<\/p>\n

Their eyes\u00a0followed Sally\u00a0about the room admiring her grace and confidence.\u00a0\u00a0In awe of a\u00a0woman not that much older than themselves but in many ways\u00a0older and wiser than anyone they’d ever known.\u00a0 Charismatic.\u00a0 Energising. \u00a0Always hopeful. \u00a0That’s what they saw. \u00a0This was their experience.<\/p>\n

<\/em>I really like Sally.\u00a0 She\u2019s\u00a0lovely without being \u00a0full of herself.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n

Honestly?\u00a0 I think she’s formidable.\u00a0\u00a0<\/em>Maggie reflected on an earlier conversation she’d had with her boss that day; appraisal time.\u00a0 Bet Sally’s got a five year plan!<\/em><\/p>\n

She reminds me of you a bit Maggie but with a better taste in shoes and probably a social life. <\/em><\/p>\n

Ouch.<\/p>\n

Anyway … the only thing that Aunt Kate told me is that Golly Gosh wasn’t meant to be a long term thing and that’s the reason Sally has never moved into the flat up above the cafe.<\/em><\/p>\n

I thought it was because she didn\u2019t want to be available to everybody 24\/7 and who could blame her? So, since your Auntie Kate\u2019s the font of all knowledge, what’s next? Surely she can\u2019t sell up? <\/em><\/p>\n

We could always just ask her but I don’t want her to think we’ve been gossiping. Let’s ask Alice instead. <\/em><\/p>\n

They laughed knowing that Alice would be the last person to tell anything.<\/p>\n
